Comments from Regatta

Regatta started well on Monday morning, with good breeze and some shower. Managed 69 races sailed.

Lots of really close racing and a few upsets, a prelude to an exciting week.

Started with sailors forum run by Richard Brown of YNZ, followed by rules seminar taken by Ruebin Corbert and Logan Sutherland. Racing was due to start at midday, but it was still raining and no wind.

After several hours of waiting the wet, disappointed sailor were sent home.

Some very close racing, somes races even had teams winning won on 11 points, due to situations on finish lines where a red flag was given by umpire after a boat had closed the finish line and incurring 6 points for that boat.

At times early on, it was very windy and cold (Nelson's sunshine will return next week???). The spirit of New Zealand, left the harbor, but returned shortly afterwards as it was too rough..

Some of the support boats involved in the regatta had to undertake a rescue of boat which got too close to the sandbar.

Everyone has had a win and most the races are close finishes.

Prize for trick sailing goes to New Plymouth Girls High today for finishing with 3 people in one boat and another boat with just one sailor.

The spectators had entertainment  as the course had the finish just in front of the clubrooms.

The round robin is expected to finish in the morning and then move to the final for top 4 places and then move to silver fleet (5 - 11th places) and bronze fleet (12 - 18th places). All the finals, Gold, silver and bronze have the potential of being some very close racing.

Maybe sunshine tomorrow...

Day of frustration as wind came up, get course out, get the boats and sailors out on the water, get ready to start races, wind dies, waiting, coming ashore for while wind comes back for a while, repeat the process of course, boats out ready to race and wind dies...

Makes for a busy final day, lots of people hoping for good steady winds.
