2004 INAUGURAL SPRING SECONDARY SCHOOLS TEAMS RACING REGATTA This regatta was held by the Sandspit Yacht Club at Algies Bay during the second week of the school holidays. Ten teams from Napier to Kerikeri sailed over 90 races in the 2 days with the emphasis on development. The traditional top teams were fielding first time younger skippers mixed with New Zealands' best from Kerikeri, Grammar, Mahurangi, St. Cuth's and Westlake. This kept the standard of racing high and racing was very close between the up and coming teams from Lindisfarne (Napier) and Whangarei while those fielding new junior team sailors like Otomoetai (Tauranga) and Kristin improved to new levels. The event was sponsored by the NZ420 group and having 24 420's and 6 umpire boats on the water at all times meant a continual flow of racing. All have vowed to be back for the summer coaching camp and regatta December 6-9 at Algies in preparation for the Secondary Schools Teams racing champs in April which are to be held in Auckland next year.
